An exciting new grass-roots effort is underway in Iron County to better support silent sports in the community. Although we have been building infrastructure, events and promotions around silent sports for many years, this will be the first time that the entire county comes together to focus on the special and unique silent sports offerings of Iron County.
The group has only met a few times now, but has already built a foundation for action. The committee has agreed to the following three priorities to focus their work:
1. Trail Development – Including Access, Signage and Cataloging
2. Events, Activities, Promotions and Mapping
3. Education, Advocacy and Lobbying
We are currently in the action planning stage to identify projects to accomplish the above priorities. Early ideas include building stronger relationships with neighboring communities on silent sports initiatives, offering silent sports events in every month of the year including shoulder seasons and creating a county-wide map of existing and proposed non-motorized trails.
The committee will continue to meet on a monthly basis. We meet the last Wednesday of the month at 6:30 pm in the Mercer Community Center. All interested people are invited and encouraged to attend.
