Extension Iron County to Offer New Youth Programming

Extension Iron County Youth Development Educator, Neil Klemme and his summer assistants, Tabbi and Gavin have been busy planning some new and exciting youth programs for this summer. This is due to the cancellation of popular Iron County 4-H programs like Iron County Summer Youth Camp, Outpost Camp, TrailBlazers or SISU Endurance Team Running Club, due to COVID-19. “All of our usual summer programming caters to groups of 25-100 youth and volunteers. We are still committed to offering quality programming to youth in our community but have to shift focus to provide new and safe options to smaller group sizes,”  Klemme stated.

All of the programs highlighted below will be meeting in groups of 10 (8 youth and 2 summer staff). Space is limited, so be sure to register as soon as possible. We ask that all participants bring a face mask (we will also be providing masks, gloves and other PPE).

BABYSITTER TRAINING

The Babysitter Training is a 2020 summer program designed to introduce youth, ages 11+, into the world of babysitting. They will learn how to properly take care of children of all different ages. They will also learn how to address and handle situations in a proper way. This year, participants will become certified in CPR by GOISD-CNA Instructor-Registered Nurse-American Heart Association Instructor, Amanda Sprague and listen to guest speakers from the fire department, and more! They will go home with new recipes, new games, and a new understanding of how to balance fun and responsibility. The program is co-sponsored by the Hurley and Gogebic Ontonagon Intermediate School Districts and is open to Iron and Gogebic County youth. We will be offering morning and afternoon classes (see times below).

OUTDOOR ADVENTURE WEEK

Outdoor Adventure Week is a summer 2020 program designed for youth, grades 6-8, seeking to get outdoors and be physically active! With different routes for hiking, biking, and swimming, participants will learn more about the area they live in and get to appreciate the amazing nature they’re surrounded by. Participants will experience some of the most beautiful scenery the Northwoods has to offer, with sights of waterfalls, forests, parks, and several planned adventures.

CLASS IS FULL AS OF 7/13/20

CLOVERBUD DAY CAMP

Cloverbud Day Camp is a 2020 summer program designed to introduce youth, grades K-2, to different aspects of science and developmental learning. The day camp will consist of elemental themed days such as fire, earth, water, and air. Your child will have the opportunity to explore several questions and mysteries through exciting experiments and some really cool demonstrations!  The kids will learn new games, activities, skills, and so much more! Cloverbud Camp will be taking place for two weeks (end of July/early August).

STEM DAY CAMP

STEM Day Camp is a 2020 summer program designed to introduce youth, grades 3-6, to the wonders of technology and science! They will learn how to program robots to navigate courses, generate energy out of the elements to power batteries, and explore the complex world of 3-D printing. Their experiences at STEM Day Camp will allow them to be curious and inventive with technology, while also developing their personal, social, and teamwork skills.
