SISU Endurance Team Trail Blazers

UPCOMING EVENTS:

SISU Endurance Team TrailBlazers
Date: Tuesdays & Thursdays, starting in June 2022
Location: TBD

In 2019, the TrailBlazer program and the SISU Endurance Team mountain bike program combined to offer a great opportunity to learn trail riding and explore other trail systems in Northern Wisconsin, Minnesota and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. SET TrailBlazer participants, grades 6-8, met at the Iron County Courthouse on Tuesdays 8:00-4:00 pm and Thursdays 8:00-6:00 pm throughout June and headed out on their rides from there. The rides focused on trail-riding, but also included road riding and other adventures! On Tuesdays participants rode on local trails and roads in or near Iron County. On Thursday, participants traveled to trail systems in Duluth, Ashland, and Houghton so the riders could experience trail systems within driving distance of our county. The participants completed a short survey that asked them to rate the features of the trails that they liked and that information will be shared with the local bike leaders who are working to develop mountain bike trails in our area. Thanks to the support from the Gogebic Range United Way, we were able to offer the trips to other counties, which included lunch and snacks. We were also able to purchase a fleet of mountain bikes for participants to use (if they didn’t have a bike of their own). Iron County 4-H Youth Development Educator, Neil Klemme also offered to sponsor any SET TrailBlazer participants wanting to participate in the Copper Peak Trails Fest mountain bike race, which took place in September 2019.

After having to cancel the 2020 season, plans are underway for the 2021 SET TrailBlazers program. Stay tuned for more details.
