Extension Iron County Welcomes Horticulture Educator, Bruce Spangenberg

Join us in welcoming Bruce Spangenberg to the Extension Iron County team! Bruce started his new role as Horticulture Educator (50%) this week, and is now available to advise community members on horticulture related questions, handling soil samples, and providing resources as they are available. Scroll to the bottom of this page for Bruce’s contact information or feel free to stop by the Extension Iron County office to meet him in person, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 7:30 am – 4:30 pm.

Get to Know Horticulture Educator, Bruce Spangenberg

Bruce was born and raised in southern Wisconsin.  After obtaining a BS Degree in Soil & Crop Science from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville and a MS Degree in Horticulture from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, he began his career with University of Illinois Extension, first as McHenry County Horticulture Adviser in Woodstock, Illinois working with both homeowner and commercial horticulture audiences. He then moved on to Regional Extension Horticulture Educator positions in Grayslake and Rockford Centers in northern Illinois.

Bruce most recently held the position of Horticulture Department Chair and Instructor at McHenry County College in Crystal Lake, Illinois, where he taught credit courses and oversaw the Horticulture program.  He retired from his horticulture education career in northern Illinois and moved to the northwoods permanently in 2020. 

In his spare time Bruce enjoys fishing, flea markets, and enjoying the Northwoods with his wife Josette and dogs Ruby and Zeke. They also have grown daughters Emily and Molly.
